Track 1: K

Featuring Anxo Pintos (Galicia, Spain)

I’d never made music with the zanfona (hurdy gurdy) before...it’s full of things I love...drones and buzzes, bends and chromatics, mechanics and a part called the dog. It felt so right when Anxo gave me a lesson.

TRACK 2: A Miña Burriña

Featuring Xosé Liz & Hugo Franco (Galicia, Spain)

Xosé and Hugo are locomotives of driving rhythm. This trio prepared a full set of music for a gig at an old walled Spanish city. This is the first Galician tune I ever learned.

Track 3: Calum's Road / The Hut on Staffin Island /
Duck River

Featuring Alan Kelly (Galway, Ireland)

Alan and I crossed paths at a few local jams. He has such a playful and good-natured way about himself that spills over to his melodies, accompaniment, and conversation. We clicked fast and playing together was pure joy.

Music Arranged by: Casey Driessen & Alan Kelly
Accordion: Alan Kelly
Fiddle & Audio/Video: Casey Driessen
Recorded at: Alan’s home (Galway, Ireland)

Track 4: She Moved Through the Fair

Featuring Tommy O’Sullivan (Dingle, Ireland)

Tommy and I spent the afternoon in his pub before opening, stoking a wood burning stove while he shared some of his favorite songs with me. He and his wife Saundra took great care of us in Dingle, and our families even spent Thanksgiving together.

Vocal & Guitar: Tommy O'Sullivan
Fiddle & Audio/Video: Casey Driessen
Recorded at: O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub (Dingle, Ireland)

*VIDEO NOTE: Video is a different song from the album track. All songs recorded in the same sitting.

Track 5: Musical Priest / Toss the Feathers / Lucy Campbell's

Featuring Blackie O'Connell & Cyril O'Donoghue (Doolin, Ireland)

Blackie and Cyril are unhinged! I showed up for their gig at a little pub on the west coast of Ireland. This final set of tunes is a good window into our epic evening.

Track 6: The Smith's a Gallant Fireman / Donald Blue / S’iomadh Rud a Chunnaic Mi

Featuring Eilidh Shaw & Ross Martin (Highlands, Scotland)

When the weather was good enough to get the ferry to ‘civilization’ from our remote Highland home on Knoydart, I would visit Eilidh and Ross. We shared jams, lessons, and even a holiday fundraiser ceilidh for their kid’s school.

Guitar: Ross Martin

Track 7: Manyota dao Jibonke

Featuring Arko Mukhaerjee (Kolkata, India)

Arko has a rich and unique style. Hindustani music is in his family, but he also had a bluegrass band in Kolkata. He gave me an invaluable tip on local Baul music, and one day I hope to visit the Himalayas with him.

Track 8: Aye Nagari

Featuring Rina Das Baul, Dibakar Das Baul, Bama Choron Das, Moyna Das (West Bengal, India)

Visiting the home of Rina and Dibakar Das Baul is one of my treasured memories from this trip. After a home cooked meal, the music began. Members of their community stopped by, some to play music, others just to listen. And I even had the pleasure of hearing Rina’s father sing.

Track 9: Baaro Saadhanakerige

Featuring Raghu Dixit (Bengaluru, India)

Raghu was a friend of a friend who treated us so generously, as if we’d known each other for years. It wasn’t until we sat to record that I heard the full power of his voice...and he nearly knocked me over.

Lyrics: Dr. Da. Ra. Bendre, Gnanpeetha Award Winning writer from Karnataka, India [Poem Translation]

Track 11: Ecchu-Owara-Bushi / Sakura, Sakura

Featuring Yutaka Oyama & Akihito Obama (Tokyo, Japan)

I had only met Akihito a few minutes beforehand, Yutaka being our friend in common. We talked out an arrangement, tried a couple things, and then recorded it...just twice. The listening was intense, the dynamics huge, and the communication transcendent.

Track 12: Kouon Frouva

Featuring Esko Järvelä (Kaustinen, Finland)

Esko is my 5-string fiddle brother in Finland, and we have lots in common. That is, until it comes to polskas and second voice playing - which a friend compared to the coveted richness of a pedal steel guitar.

Songwriter: Traditional Finnish
Music Arranged by: Casey Driessen & Esko Järvelä
Fiddle: Esko Järvelä
Fiddle, Audio & Video: Casey Driessen

Track 13: Jos sä olet minun hellunani

Featuring Maija Pokela & Antti Järvelä (Härmä, Finland)

I may have spent as much time hiking with Maija and Antti as I did playing music with them, which is to say quite a bit. It was the strangest spring on record, and we’ll forever share a unique bond, having experienced the first coronavirus lockdown together.

THANKS

This was a huge undertaking that spanned seven countries, and when you include planning time and post-trip activity, lasted over one year. I have so much to be thankful for and so many to thank.

To my adventurous traveling team, my wife Molly and daughter Emmette. I can't imagine any two people better to explore the world with. Molly, it was your suggestion that set this all in motion. I couldn't have done it without your support, understanding, or patience—nor would I have wanted to. I'm still in shock we pulled it off, and I'm eternally grateful we didn't wait an extra year. Emmette, you really blossomed in these nine months. You grew so much that none of the clothes or shoes you had at the beginning came home with you at the end. I'm so proud of your adventuresome spirit, sensitivity to different cultures, and perseverance with your parents. This trip was our gift to you. Our lives and family are forever changed by this experience and as the years go by, its significance will continue to be revealed. I love you both so much.

To our family Tom & Karen, Regina, Madonna, Phyllis, Candace, Steve, Luke, Melanie, Nate and Ezra. We missed you these past years and are glad to reunite at home. Your help with our reentry camping/tiny house quarantine was amazing. I'm lucky to have family like you, and I owe you all a big Valencian paella...or five.

To Bridget Driessen & Justin McGrath, for cat sitting Buck and Rose while globetrotting. We probably owe you a couch. To Erika, Thurman, Ellis, and Olive Richie, for taking care of our precious dog Ella, RIP.

To my dear friends and colleagues who entertained my ideas, offered their expertise and advice at different stages of the project, and encouraged me to go for it. Things went better than I could have ever imagined. Brad Henderson, Javier Vercher, Liz Teutsch, Pablo Munguia, John Gibbe, Matt Mangano, Tom Krueger, Carla Parisi, Michael Weintraub, and Al Davis.

The success of this project and the incredible memories collected along the way would not have been possible without the generosity of so many kind souls. You have helped my family and me realize a dream, and I am forever grateful. I look forward to our paths crossing once again and hope that I can welcome you to my country and my home one day. Until we meet again!

If you don't know each other yet, I sincerely hope you cross paths one day. I've tried my best to include everyone...with the exception of all the pub jams. Seeing this list of names leaves me speechless. You have enriched my life.
